1. Cleaning time

“Cleaning your gown is the single most important part of the preservation process and all the stains, including the hidden ones containing sugar that turn brown over time, must be removed,” says Sally Lorensen Conant, the executive director of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists. The cleaning time of the wedding dress is the faster the better, as far as possible to clean after the wedding is done. Otherwise, the longer the time dragged, the more difficult to be cleaned.“The longer you delay, the less likely all stains can be removed, and if you wait years, your gown will need restoration rather than just cleaning,” Conant warns.

2. Professional dress cleaning shop

As for the wedding dress cleaning, it is best to find professional and reliable cleaning dress shop. They will custom special cleaning procedures to suit the material and various stains. If you don’t handle the dress, the invisible stains will oxidize and fade into ugly yellow as time goes by. Although many dry cleaners claim to be able to clean the gowns, most of them are not professional, unless a dry cleaners wash hundreds gowns every year, and it can be considered as a qualified professional dress shop.

3. Hand washing is the best way to clean

A part of the dress-cleaning shop uses a wet-wash technique, with a mild detergent and hand-washing method. This can clean up the obvious stains, such as champagne, sugar and so on. Some of the stores use a more traditional dry cleaning technology, they deal with the stain at first, and then put the dress in the dry cleaning machine. In terms of detergent selection, full polyethylene or oil-based detergent is a good choice. Although petroleum-based solvents are not as thorough as whole polyethylene in stain cleaning, their rich oily qualities can nourish certain fabrics and make them shiny.

4. Put it in acid-free tissue paper

Wrapping the gowns material will directly affect the life of the wedding dress. The ideal packaging material is acid-free paper. Wrapping a wedding dress with plastic is not a sensible choice because it absorbs moisture, makes the clothes moldy and causes permanent wrinkles. Acid-biased paper will gradually fade the dress, most likely in the packaging of damp or stained with water, make the dress infected with other colors.

5. The best place to store your wedding dress

Attic temperature is relatively high, bridal storage in the attic is easy to fade, long-term exposure to the sun will make the dress faded. The basement is damp, it’s easy to make the wedding moldy. The best place to store a wedding gown is in a closet or under the bed, as these places are relatively cool and dry. Hanging a wedding gown is the stupidest thing to do, and you’ll find a beautiful wedding gown that turns into a sagging ugly dress for a long time.
